buy from a place like futureshop (its canadian), take the xbox360 home, open up the tray, if its a hitachi, bring it back, no questions asked, buy a different one, repeat until u get samsung (apparently core in europe/UK has better chance of being samsung, dunno if applies here)

It's potluck. Both the premium packs I have here have samsung drives. There's no way to tell without open the draw and observing the tray.

Futureshop does that with Consoles? COOL. I was told a LOONG time ago with the xbox 1 that if the seal on the box is broken, you cant return it.

I don't think anyone would will accept it opened. Although some places it may be possible.
The point being, you don't need to open the console to see what drive you have. C-S-B JUST told you this. The dvd tray lad, the dvd tray

On another site someone noticed that the lot number might be used to determine if it is a samsung. A few people bought consoles using the lot number on the box as a guide and ended up with toshiba/samsung drives.
0604 (core or premium) 0605 (prenium) 0611 (core)
It isn't really verified yet but like I said some used the lot number to get toshiba/samsung drives.
We neeed a poll or sticky there have been a half dozen threads about this but they keep getting buried under new threads.
If you have a Xbox360 post your lot number and drive and maybe this can be shown to be true or false.

How long will ik take before the Hitatchi FW is out?
C4E is working on it and it will note take long time before releasing.
So while all hard work finding a Samsung drive now? Perhaps the Hitatchi wil read the DVD DL media better... who knows. Than you will be glad having a Hitachi.
Be patience!

the hitachi uses the exact same laser unit as the samsung, their reading abilities are identical.

I bought my 360 today, and after reading a lot about serialnumbers and lot numbers I decided to go for one with lotnr (can see lotnr on the case) 0611. produced in march. And I got a Samsung drive The store (where I work) got another one with the same manufacturing date and lot number, wounder if that has a Samsung.
